Polyethylene
Most of our products are made from polyethylene (PE). It's one of the most widely used plastics in the world. Polyethylene is a flexible, recyclable plastic which is made from crude oil, just like other plastics.
Polyethylene types
The following are the main polyethylene types that we process: LDPE, MDPE and COEX.
- Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is a glossy and flexible material which is transparent in its natural state. This plastic is often coloured white to achieve a dynamic effect when printing colours. LDPE can also be coloured in other colour upon request. Higher minimum quantities and a price supplement apply for this option.
- Medium Density Polyethylene (MDPE) has a matt appearance and is more rigid than LDPE. In its natural state, MDPE is semi-transparent and looks similar to tracing paper. Just like LDPE, MDPE can be coloured white or another colour.
- COEX or coex film consists of several layers of polyethylene and each layer has specific properties. Coextrusion makes it possible to combine the benefits and properties of different materials in a single film. For example, one layer can be glossy while another can have a matt appearance. Each layer can also have a different colour and this technique is applied, among others, for mailing bags. The outside is often white for printing on and the inside is coloured so the bag is opaque.
Why choose polyethylene for your packaging or carrier bag?
Polyethylene has the following advantages:
- A polyethylene carrier bag is extremely strong and is resistant against tropical heat and extreme freezing cold temperatures. Polyethylene is also water-resistant.
- Polyethylene is recyclable. It's a thermoplastic material so it can be melted and reused almost endlessly.
- Polyethylene is a relatively inexpensive raw material in comparison with paper or bioplastic based on starch.
- PE packaging and carrier bags have a long life and can be reused several times.
- The production process of polyethylene packaging is more energy efficient than that for paper packaging solutions. In addition, plastic is more compact and lighter than paper, which means that the transport of plastic packaging has a reduced impact on the environment.
